about larry pelty

A product builder with a foundation in design and systems thinking.

I’m a full-stack product builder focused on AI-powered tools, agentic systems, and the workflows that connect an idea to a working product. My career has moved from design leadership into hands-on building, bringing product definition, design, and implementation into one practice.

At Smartsheet, where my title is Sr. Principal Product Designer, I built and productized an advanced agentic harness for internal use. I’m now onboarding users and expanding the platform’s capabilities. Alongside the technical work, I’m driving AI transformation across Product and UX—working through the alignment, adoption, and changes in practice needed to make it useful in the organization.

I also build independently. Build Meter, a personal app currently in TestFlight, has been a practical setting for developing and testing AI-assisted product workflows as I work toward an App Store release.

Before this transition, I spent more than 25 years across visual, UX, and product design, including leading design teams at Groove and Clari. My background in psychology and enterprise UX shapes how I understand behavior, simplify complex systems, and make product decisions. I bring that experience into the software I build today.

I’m a co-inventor on a U.S. patent application for a dynamic workflow system and the inventor on a provisional application for context-aware social interaction guidance through wearable devices. Mentorship remains part of my practice: I continue to support designers as they develop their skills and navigate their careers.

My Principles and values

The Principles Behind My Work

These principles connect my experience in design and leadership with the way I build products today.

Ikonik Icon

1. Start with Purpose

Be clear about the problem, who it matters to, and what a useful outcome looks like. That clarity guides decisions when scope and complexity grow.

2. Build Understanding Together

Listen closely, share context, and make decisions visible. Strong collaboration depends on people understanding both the work and the reasoning behind it.

3. Test Ideas in Practice

Turn assumptions into something people can try. Working software and real feedback help distinguish promising ideas from useful products.

4. Care About Craft

Clarity, reliability, and thoughtful interactions all matter. The details should help people understand the product and trust what it does.

5. Work Across Boundaries

Move between product, design, and implementation as the problem requires. Collaborate across disciplines while keeping ownership and responsibilities clear.

6. Stay Curious, Stay Humble

Treat each product and problem as an opportunity to learn. Revise assumptions when the evidence changes and remain open to unexpected solutions.

Mentorship & Coaching

Mentorship in Practice

I provide hands-on mentorship for product designers navigating career growth, skill development, and real-world challenges. Through platforms like ADPList and UXPA, I’ve supported hundreds of designers with guidance rooted in practical experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to thrive in today’s design roles.
